The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a new program to help reduce transportation costs for university students and staff. They will support the conversion of vehicles to use Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) instead of regular fuel, making it cheaper to operate. As part of this initiative, the government will also introduce 100 CNG-powered buses at 20 public universities, with a fare of N150 per trip. This project, called Project SPROUT, aims to make transportation more affordable for everyone on campus. Officials explained that this plan is part of a promise made to university staff to help lower their transportation expenses, which can take up a large part of their income. The conversion of vehicles to CNG will be subsidized, meaning the government will help cover some of the costs. The initiative is already being tested at a few universities, and the goal is to expand it to more campuses in the future. University leaders have praised the project, hoping it will provide lasting support to students and staff.
