The Rivers State House of Assembly has paused its regular meetings to focus on the serious flooding issues affecting communities in Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor. This decision was made during a legislative session after a member, Hon. Linda Somiari-Stewart, highlighted the urgent need to address the flooding, which has damaged homes and disrupted people's lives. The lawmakers decided to visit the flooded areas to see the damage firsthand and understand the situation better. During their visit, they found that many families had been forced to leave their homes, and some roads were unusable due to the water. The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, noted that the flooding was partly caused by blocked canals and drainage systems, and he urged the relevant agencies to take action to clear these blockages. The Speaker expressed hope that the state government would take necessary steps to resolve the flooding issues and protect residents.
