Afreximbank has announced that the $16 billion Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals project in Lamu, Kenya, is a significant investment for Africa. This refinery, which will process 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily, aims to reduce Africa's reliance on imported fuel and enhance energy security. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 30, 2026, with notable attendees including Kenyan President William Ruto and Dangote Group's CEO, Aliko Dangote. The refinery is expected to create around 60,000 jobs and will source crude oil from African countries like Uganda, supplying refined products to Kenya and other East African markets. Dr. George Elombi from Afreximbank emphasized that this project showcases Africa's ability to develop its own industrial capabilities, which can lead to job creation and stronger trade connections within the continent. He pointed out that recent global disruptions in energy supply have highlighted the need for Africa to manage its resources better and reduce dependency on distant suppliers. Afreximbank is also supporting other industrial projects in Kenya, including the Dongo Kundu Integrated Industrial Park and Naivasha Special Economic Zone II, which together are expected to create about 140,000 jobs. The bank has invested significantly in supporting Dangote Group's initiatives in Africa. Overall, the Lamu refinery is seen as a step towards transforming Africa's economy by increasing local production and processing of resources, thereby boosting trade within the continent.
