Botswana is celebrating 60 years of independence on September 30, and Lesotho will celebrate its own 60th anniversary of independence on October 4. Both countries gained freedom from British colonial rule in 1966. In an interview, Mrs. Mabasia Shano, a coordinator in Lesotho, mentioned that they recognize the close connection between the two countries, including their shared independence month and year. She wished Botswana a happy independence and encouraged the people of Lesotho to see their upcoming celebration as a warm-up for their own special day. Lesotho's celebrations will include performances of a song that reflects on their 60-year journey, featuring various artists. Mrs. Shano also mentioned plans for ongoing celebrations beyond October 4, including sustainable projects in different districts to create lasting legacies. Additionally, there are hopes for future joint celebrations between Botswana and Lesotho, promoting cooperation between the two nations. Both countries are part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and are working together on various initiatives, including a water agreement.
