Burundi confirmed on Thursday that it has signed an agreement with the United States to accept third-country nationals deported by the Trump administration. The head of state's spokeswoman, Nancy-Ninette Mutoni, told AFP that President Evariste Ndayishimiye recently agreed to take in migrants turned away by the US, but only those not being prosecuted for crimes or suspected of terrorism. An AFP investigation in early 2026 revealed that the US had encouraged around 35 countries, mostly in Africa, to accept deportees in return for aid and had threatened visa restrictions if they refused. Washington has been seeking new deals with African governments since Trump dismantled USAID.
