The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has said nobody should be forced to embrace Islam. He urged Muslims to respect the rights and freedoms of people of other faiths. Speaking at the NSCIA General Assembly at the National Mosque in Abuja, he noted that many people are joining Islam on their own free will. The assembly was held about seven years after the council's last such meeting.
