Stringent visa policies and restrictions between Nigeria and South Africa have negatively affected passenger movement between the two countries, reducing the number of Nigerians travelling to South Africa. The development affected South Africa Airways' operations in Nigeria, with the airline recording a significant drop in passenger traffic, and forced Nigerian carrier Air Peace to suspend flight service to South Africa. The two countries had previously maintained a robust relationship, with tour operators regularly taking tourists to South Africa and Nigerian corporates holding conferences there, before South Africa introduced constricting visa rules and embassy officials in Nigeria were said to treat applicants highhandedly.
