A fault line is emerging in Nigeria-China trade relations as Chinese businesses increasingly shift toward a direct-to-retail consumer model that bypasses traditional Nigerian importers, wholesalers and retailers. The trend has drawn backlash from local businesses and traders, with heightened visibility following September 16, 2026 protests by traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex over increasing Chinese retail outlets. Chinese retail warehouses are also thriving at locations including Tejuosho Market, Acme Road, Land Bridge Avenue, Bucknor Estate and China Town. In these outlets, operators increasingly rent shops, buildings or warehouses inside or near markets, import in bulk with direct manufacturer access, and sell at or near wholesale prices to end consumers.
