UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher has welcomed the extension of the Adré border crossing between Chad and Sudan for humanitarian use. Fletcher described Adré as a vital lifeline for people in Darfur, thanking authorities in both countries. According to OCHA, more than 1,300 trucks carrying over 50,000 metric tonnes of aid moved through the crossing into Sudan in the first eight months of this year. Keeping Adré open and ensuring safe access were among Fletcher's top 10 access asks during the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week.
