In December 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that Nigeria would end the practice of running multiple budgets on the same revenue inflow. He stated that by March 31, 2026, all capital liabilities from previous years would be fully funded and closed, and from April, Nigeria would operate on a single budget backed by a single revenue cycle. However, on September 30, 2026, the President assented to the Appropriation (Amendment) (No.4) Bill, 2025, extending the implementation of the 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026. The Presidency said the extension would give Ministries, Departments and Agencies more time to complete ongoing capital projects and ensure that funds already appropriated are utilized.
