The United Nations has allocated US$160 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund to support life-saving assistance in 12 of the world's most underfunded humanitarian crises across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The allocation is part of a broader effort to reach 87 million people facing severe humanitarian needs this year. According to Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, the funding will help aid reach people who might otherwise be left behind, but he stressed that political will is also needed to open access and remove obstacles. Of the total, $150 million will support responses in countries including Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Cuba, Mali, and Nigeria.
