Ethiopia: African Union must convene emergency session on Ethiopia as new conflict expands

Amnesty International has called on the African Union to convene an emergency session on the situation in northern Ethiopia, where armed conflict broke out on 21 September in Tigray and parts of Afar and Amhara regions. The organization reported credible accounts of destruction of civilian objects through shelling and air strikes, intensified forced conscription, and other acts that may violate international humanitarian law. Amnesty stated that the AU's Peace and Security Council cannot wait for mass atrocities to unfold before placing Ethiopia on its agenda. The AU, which was one of the guarantors of the now effectively collapsed ceasefire agreement, is urged to activate its response mechanisms and mobilize member states.
