The Court of Appeal has affirmed the nullification of certain provisions of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) that granted the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) powers over religious bodies and other associations. The court held that sections 839, 842, 843, 844, 845, 846, 847, and 848 of CAMA infringed upon constitutionally protected rights to freedom of thought, conscience, religion, association, and peaceful assembly. The ruling upholds an earlier decision that these sections were unconstitutional. The case was brought by religious organizations challenging the CAC's authority over their operations.
