Mozambique needs integrated human rights vision for climate resilience and international cooperation to avoid fossil fuel lock-in, says United Nations (UN) expert

A UN expert, Elisa Morgera, Special Rapporteur on human rights and climate change, stated that Mozambique needs an integrated human rights vision for climate resilience and international cooperation to avoid fossil fuel lock-in. At the end of an official visit, Morgera identified opportunities and risks for human rights at the nexus of development and a healthy environment. She warned that high-emitting states, donors, and financial institutions must refrain from deepening Mozambique's fossil fuel dependency. The expert noted that global temperature rise is set to cross 1.5°C, disproportionately affecting Least Developed Countries.
