The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris delivered a landmark judgment on September 17, 2026, dismissing claims by Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited over the Mambilla Plateau Hydroelectric Power Project. The tribunal's decision saved Nigeria from paying $3.38 billion to settle a contract that was widely considered dubious and improperly authorised. The dispute began in 2003 when then Minister of Power Olu Agunloye awarded the contract to Sunrise without the approval of then-President Olusegun Obasanjo. The irregular award also prevented China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC), the Chinese company engaged to execute the project, from proceeding.
