Ekiti State was carved out of the old Ondo State by the late former military Head of State, Gen. Sanni Abacha, on October 1, 1996, alongside Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Gombe, Nasarawa, and Zamfara States. The creation followed years of persistent agitation by notable Ekiti elders who sought a state of their own. Ekiti is one of the smallest but most educated states in Nigeria, with the highest number of professors in the country. It comprises over 131 notable towns and communities, with about 85 percent Christians, 10 percent Muslims, and 5 percent traditional worshippers.
