Brazil's presidential race will go to a second round after far-right candidate Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, beat incumbent leftwing President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva but failed to secure an outright majority. With more than 99 per cent of votes counted, the 45-year-old Bolsonaro won 47.1 per cent and will face an October 25 showdown with his 80-year-old rival, who received 45 per cent. Bolsonaro will go into the second round as favourite and is likely to be boosted by votes from other rightwing candidates, including Ronaldo Caiado, who secured 2.1 per cent, and Renan Santos, who won 2.2 per cent. Brazil's far-right put in a stronger than expected showing, with a succession of Bolsonarista politicians winning congressional or gubernatorial races.
