Katherine Naylor Pullman started Our Third Place, a networking group for women in media, as a part-time side project four years ago with monthly dinners that soon became weekly. The group has expanded to 40 cities and now has 1,800 members, without large investors. Naylor Pullman and CEO Ashley Preininger are using a seed-strapping approach, raising smaller investments from family and friends and growing through revenue rather than traditional venture capital. Naylor Pullman believes that scaling community by the millions is not possible.
