Nearly 150m Africans live with mental health conditions — WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that nearly 150 million people in Africa are living with mental health, neurological, or substance use conditions. The WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a message for the 2026 World Mental Health Day. He called for greater investment in mental healthcare and community-based care, noting that stigma and discrimination remain significant barriers to seeking help.
