A list of the 10 oldest universities in Africa has been compiled, highlighting institutions with origins dating back over 1,000 years. The ranking is based on the earliest documented origins of the institution or educational tradition, rather than the date when each acquired modern university status. Some began as mosques, madrasas, and centres of Islamic scholarship, while others started as colleges in the 19th century. Ez-Zitouna University in Tunisia, with educational origins in 737 AD, tops the list.
