President Bola Tinubu returned to Lagos on the eve of Independence Day, October 1, after more than three weeks out of the country, to address the nation as is customary for Nigerian presidents. The address, titled 'From Reform to Prosperity,' sought to declare that the difficulties caused by his administration's economic reforms were over and would soon give way to prosperity and well-being. Tinubu said that for too long, Nigeria's promise was undermined by choices that postponed difficult decisions and allowed deep economic distortions to grow. He noted that in 2023, poverty was rising and hope was nearly gone.
