The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu can secure all five existing states in the South-east in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that the administration has addressed the marginalisation which influenced the region's rejection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023. Umahi, a former governor of Ebonyi State, also dismissed the presidential aspiration of Peter Obi as a major threat to Tinubu's re-election bid, although he acknowledged that the former Anambra State governor remained a significant political figure. Speaking on Channels Television's Sunday Politics, Umahi said the political situation in the South-east had changed considerably since the 2023 election, when Obi, then the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, won all five states in the region. He argued that the outcome of that election should be viewed in context.
