World Teachers' Day is observed annually on October 5 to celebrate the teaching profession and renew commitment to teachers' rights, status, working conditions, and wellbeing. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets international benchmarks for teachers' rights, responsibilities, and employment conditions. As Nigeria joined global observances, reports indicate that improved welfare remains a central demand among Nigerian teachers. The theme for this year's commemoration is 'Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession'.
