An employee at an anti-plague laboratory in Siberia, 28-year-old Daria Shipilova, died on October 2 after being hospitalized days earlier for pneumonia in Shelekhov. There is confusion over the illness that caused her death, with conflicting reports from the region. The World Health Organization told the Associated Press on October 6 that the plague presents a very low risk to the broader European region. The WHO also said the United States is at very low risk of exposure to the plague.
