The Niger State Government has released N249 million to families of 37 deceased illegal miners and 32 survivors, hours after the federal government provided N250 million to the same beneficiaries. Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago gave N5 million to each deceased miner's family and N2 million to each survivor. Bago said the intervention was designed to support the affected families and cushion the economic and emotional impacts of the tragedy. He added that the financial assistance would provide beneficiaries an opportunity to venture into alternative economic activities rather than return to unsafe and unprofessional mining practices. The state government also directed the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board to establish schools in appropriate communities.
