In a final interview with Vanguard, originally published on January 20, 2026, the late elder statesman Chief Ralph Obioha rejected the characterization of the January 15, 1966 coup as an 'Igbo coup.' Obioha, a former chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), argued that the label was a deliberate narrative created to marginalize the Igbo people. He emphasized that the coup was not an Igbo affair and that the Igbo have suffered unjustly from this misrepresentation for decades. The interview was conducted by Chioma Gabriel and also references a related piece on the 60th anniversary of the coup.
