The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, has backed the legal amendment seeking to decentralise the operation of the Nigeria Police. The council adopted this resolution in a communique issued at the end of its General Assembly held in Abuja on October 1, 2026. The communique, signed by Abubakar and Secretary-General Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, called for urgent and comprehensive reform of Nigeria's security architecture. NSCIA reiterated its support for state policing, provided the reform is anchored on professionalism, constitutional safeguards, impartiality, accountability, sustainable funding, respect for fundamental rights, and effective coordination.
