The Federal Ministry of Works has denied reports that demarcations installed on the First Niger Bridge in Onitsha are being removed after public criticism. Engr. Timothy Emenike, the Federal Controller of Works for the Anambra State Field Headquarters, said openings were created in the demarcations to allow vehicles make emergency U-turns and enable the Federal Road Safety Corps and other agencies to operate effectively. He stated that the clarification was necessary to reduce tension and correct a wrong impression created by the reports. According to Emenike, tarring work on the bridge has been completed, while painting of the railings, which began last week, is ongoing and will be finished soon. He also indicated that the bridge may reopen this week.
