Technology journalist Kevin Roose argues that many of the people most worried about AI's power are also the people running the most powerful AI companies, and that this has been the case from the start of the field. He says many men leading the AI boom, most prominently Anthropic's Dario Amodei and OpenAI's Sam Altman, have rushed to build AI at least in part because they feared someone less responsible would beat them to it. Some AI critics accuse such leaders of inflating apocalyptic AI worries to hype their own businesses. Roose notes that this kind of concern is commonplace in AI circles, including in San Francisco's tech scene.
