Canada will not allow assisted suicide for those with only mental illness

Canada will not allow medically assisted suicide for people whose only condition is mental illness, Justice Minister Sean Fraser said Wednesday. Canada legalized assisted dying for those at the end of life in 2016 and extended it to those with serious and incurable illnesses in 2021. The expansion to include mental illness was initially set for 2024 but was delayed by three years. Without government action, the exclusion would have expired in March, but Fraser said the Liberal government plans to pass legislation to prohibit it.
