The United States Department of Homeland Security has proposed a $70,000 fee for international students seeking to work in the country through the Optional Practical Training (OPT) programme. Under the proposed rule, schools would be required to pay the fee for each international student's initial OPT application, with a $30,000 fee for renewals. OPT allows eligible foreign students to work in jobs related to their fields of study for one year after graduation, with an additional two years for graduates in certain STEM fields. The policy could affect Nigerian students, among others.
