The Supreme Court delivered a judgment on June 26 in which a seven-member panel, by a five-to-two majority, declared section 12(7) of the Legal Practitioners Act (as amended) unconstitutional. This provision had allowed appeals from the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to the Supreme Court. The LPDC is the statutory body responsible for disciplining lawyers in Nigeria, with powers to suspend or strike off legal practitioners. The ruling means the Supreme Court will no longer hear appeals from the LPDC.
