The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that political parties that field candidates whose names are not on the registers submitted to the commission will not participate in the 2027 elections. INEC National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna made this known while speaking on Trust TV, noting that the Supreme Court had affirmed the constitutionality of relevant sections of the Electoral Act 2026. He said parties will not be allowed to substitute such candidates because defaulters will not benefit from an offence they committed. INEC is expected to make a definite pronouncement on the Supreme Court judgment by Tuesday next week.
