The Igbo Heroes and Icons Foundation (IHIF) has stated that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), does not need the support of state governors to win the South-South geopolitical zone in the 2027 election. The group's leader, Hon. Chinedu Nsofor, made this remark while responding to comments attributed to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike regarding Obi's political strength. Nsofor emphasized that the key issue ahead of the 2027 election is whether a candidate can build broad national support based on character, competence, record of service, and the confidence of ordinary citizens, rather than access to government machinery. He also said the election should not be reduced to a contest between political establishments or ethnic calculations.
