The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway of the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for essential repairs and resurfacing. The proposed closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and last approximately 25 days, subject to final confirmation. According to a statement by FAAN's Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the intervention became necessary following the deterioration of sections of the runway, including potholes and extensive surface cracks worsened by recent heavy rainfall. The rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, treatment of cracks, and resurfacing of affected sections to improve the runway's operational condition, and is being planned ahead of the anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic during the Christmas season.
