The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to temporarily close the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, for essential repairs and resurfacing. According to FAAN, the closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and will last approximately 25 days, pending final confirmation. The intervention is necessary due to deterioration, including potholes and extensive surface cracking, worsened by recent heavy rainfall. The rehabilitation will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing to restore the runway to a safer operational condition ahead of an anticipated increase in passenger and flight traffic.
