The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is reviewing its decision to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) every four years. CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated at a strategy conference in Cape Verde that the matter is being reconsidered, including the possibility of returning to a biennial schedule. The tournament has been held every two years since 1968, except for a one-year gap between 2012 and 2013. In December 2025, CAF announced a shift to a four-year cycle after the 2027 and 2028 editions, but the plan faced widespread criticism from national associations over visibility, commercial implications, and the competition's place in the international calendar.
