On October 1, while Nigerians marked 66 years of independence, 20 young Nigerians were deprived of their freedom on an Imo road while travelling from Ibadan to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states for the National Youth Service Corps programme. A week later, on October 7, they were rescued by a joint operation involving security agencies and taken for medical attention. The incident has raised questions about how young Nigerians travelling to fulfil a compulsory national obligation became so dangerously exposed. The rescue has been acknowledged, but concerns remain about the safety of corps members.
