The 59th memorial of the Asaba Massacre, which occurred on October 7, 1967, during the Nigerian Civil War, was held on October 7, 2026. The event commemorated the estimated 1,000 Asaba men killed and featured apologies and gestures toward reconciliation. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo expressed regret, and Major General Ahmed Ibrahim Taiwo (retd.), son of Col Ibrahim Taiwo, apologized for his father's role in the massacre.
