As Nigeria marks World Mental Health Day, experts highlight that one in four Nigerians will experience mental ill-health in their lifetime. Millions are living with depression, anxiety, substance use disorders and other conditions, often without access to appropriate care. Stigma, poverty, cultural misconceptions and a severe shortage of mental health professionals—with only about 250 psychiatrists serving the country—have compounded the problem. Access to treatment remains uneven, particularly in rural communities where specialist facilities and trained professionals are scarce.
