The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is mourning the passing of Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, who died on October 8, 2026, at the age of 85. In a statement, Dean Professor Oloruntola Sunday described Sobowale as a distinguished scholar, veteran journalist, and astute administrator, and one of the foremost pioneers of Mass Communication education and practice in Nigeria. Sobowale, a former student, lecturer, and Head of the Department of Mass Communication at UNILAG, was praised as 'a professor of professors' whose intellectual depth and dedication to mentorship shaped the careers of numerous students and colleagues.
