A US service member deployed aboard a ship in the Middle East suffered severe injuries in an equipment accident in March. He had to go ashore for care, but there was no US-run medical facility available nearby. He was treated at a host-nation hospital before being transferred to the American military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where doctors found his limb had turned almost black and his life was in danger.
