In December 2014, Rafi Meitiv and his younger sister Dvora were stopped by police while walking home alone from a Maryland playground. The children, then 10 and 6, were about three-quarters of a mile from home and had previously walked the route with their parents. Police drove them home and spoke with their parents, and the family was later investigated by child protective services. Now 21, Rafi said the experience of free-range parenting gave him freedom.
