The Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has urged Nigerian universities to reduce reliance on government allocations and instead explore capital market funding. Speaking at the University of Ibadan Alumni Association Annual Public Service Lecture in Ibadan, Agama noted that the university has never raised long-term funds from the capital market despite its history. He recalled that in 1948, Ibadan chiefs donated 2,500 acres of land to the institution on a 999-year lease. The lecture was themed 'First and Best But Whose Capital Built It? Rethinking How Nigeria Funds Its Own Future'.
