Africa's most innovative countries are investing in technology, research, entrepreneurship and industrial development as they seek to strengthen their economies and compete in the global market. From mobile money and financial technology to automotive manufacturing and artificial intelligence, countries across the continent are adopting different approaches to innovation. While some are building on established research institutions and industrial capacity, others are using digital solutions to tackle challenges in finance, agriculture, healthcare and public services. However, the pace of innovation varies considerably across the continent, with access to investment, skilled workers, research facilities and reliable infrastructure continuing to influence the ability of countries to develop new technologies and turn ideas into commercially successful products, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation's (WIPO) Global Innovation Index 2026.
