The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cleared Kingsley Chinda to contest the 2027 governorship election in Rivers State. Chinda, a former minority leader of the House of Representatives and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, was listed as number 5 on the 19-man list released by INEC on Saturday. His emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate had generated interest, as his defection to the APC was not widely reported. The clearance follows the Supreme Court's restoration of certain sections of the Electoral Act 2026, which bar parties from fielding candidates whose names are not in the membership register submitted to INEC.
