The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness launched South Africa's first health rewards pilot for public healthcare users on 10 October 2026. The programme, called WOWRewards, will operate as a long-term pilot in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, to test whether small rewards can encourage healthier habits and earlier access to preventative care. At the launch, Minister of Health and Wellness Mireille Wenger noted that while rewards programmes are common in private medical schemes, most South Africans rely on public healthcare. She said WOWRewards will explore how a rewards approach can support healthier choices for public health system users.
