In Otallo, South Sudan, girls face significant obstacles in pursuing education beyond the primary level. The lack of formal upper primary and secondary schools in the area forces them to travel long distances to Pochalla South County or across the border into Ethiopia, exposing them to risks such as abduction and abuse. Parents are torn between protecting their daughters and hoping education will provide a better future. One mother, Ajulu Pio Obang, described the fear of living like asylum seekers and the added worry of exposing girls to danger when they go to school.
