The Gas Exporting Countries Forum has projected that global energy demand will grow by 20 percent by 2055, rising from 641 exajoules in 2024 to 768 exajoules. Abubakar Abbas, a senior energy forecast analyst at the forum, said the increase will be driven by economic and population growth. Speaking at the Energy Finance Forum during African Energy Week 2026 in Cape Town, he said renewable energy and natural gas are expected to account for much of the growth, creating opportunities for investment in new gas developments and supporting infrastructure. Natural gas is expected to play an increasingly important role in power generation, with its share of global gas demand from power generation projected to rise from 35 percent in 2024 to 39 percent by 2055.
