The Minister of Works, David Umahi, reopened the First Niger Bridge on Thursday after rehabilitation works. The bridge, which links Onitsha and Asaba, was closed on September 7, 2026, for emergency repairs initially scheduled to end on September 21, but the closure was extended due to persistent rainfall and other unforeseen circumstances. The rehabilitation was necessitated by the discovery of vandalised structural components, including steelwork around the bridge’s expansion joints. At the reopening, Umahi praised the Tinubu administration for its commitment to infrastructure development in the South-East and South-South regions.
